Storytelling Through Song

This memorable evening of jazz singing and some gospel and pop embodied the phrasing, style, articulation, scatting, and improvisation that makes for the best storytelling through song.

Valentine’s Day Buffet of Music

Stravelli introduced tonight’s theme as a “Valentine’s Day Buffet of Music.” Time After Time, with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and music by Jule Styne, opened the Valentine’s Day show. Starting with a slow tempo, Stravelli took off, accompanied by the superb guitar work of Saul Rubin. If you were feeling a little low, Stravelli fixed all that – her repartee, musical storytelling, vitality, enthusiasm, warmth, and charm filled the room.

Panache

Don’t get me wrong, but while Stravelli evoked a fusion of excitement honoring the work of artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Kurt Elling, she conveyed her own exclusive stage presence with panache, charisma, and versatility.

Many other songs followed, like Cole Porter’s Looking at You. Stravelli also sang a lovely tribute to trombonist and bebop master J.J. Johnson with the song Like Someone in Love, in which she wrote her lyrics to fit Johnson’s improvisation. Stravelli’s tribute was unique, virtuosic, and electrifying.

Don’t Let Me Down

Switching modes, Stravelli sang her fabulous version of the Beatle’s song Don’t Let Me Down in a gospel country mode. She continued to display her wide vocal range, sound, expression, vocal colors, and stylings.

The More I See You

She sang a mellow, romantic version of the song Cómo Fue in Spanish and, after closing the evening with her interpretation of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time, performed an encore with the lovely song The More I See You. It was an evening of love, charm, delight, and incredible artistry by a gifted singer and superb guitar accompanist.

I won’t reveal Stravelli’s complete and fantastic song list, as you must get tickets for her next performances to hear for yourself.

Unforgettable Evening of Romance

Stravelli’s singing embodied the essence of jazz vocals, pushing its boundaries through strikingly original techniques and superb artistry. Her passionate, unique interpretations represented the vanguard of the art, raising the bar and inspiring her listeners to enjoy the beauty of musical storytelling. Finally, Stravelli’s vocal lines were bound to the lyrics, melody, and rhythm and connected by brilliant phrasing and interpretation. She showed that she believed in the stories she sang as she touched and moved listeners with the poetry of each song. It was an unforgettable evening of romance and fabulous music.
