When a show’s production history is more gripping than than the show itself, there may be a problem. Such is the case of the musical formerly known as Wise Guys, Gold! and Bounce that has had a long run of short runs over the past two decades. Now the Encores! Off-Center series, at New York City Center, takes their turn at bat with a concert performance starring Broadway veterans Raúl Esparza and Brandon Uranowitz, and featuring a standout number by the great Mary Beth Peil. But in a show that begins with a gold rush and ends with the burst of a real estate bubble, most everything goes downhill.
